As I looked for a community issue, I noticed the limited musical opportunities and education throughout homeless shelters. Musical instruments are expensive, and difficult to store in small spaces. Shelter space is limited for each resident, and access to music-making is difficult.
I reached out to a local Women's Shelter, Shepherd's Gate, and learned that they have monthly opportunities to learn ukulele, however they do not have any ukuleles to stay at the shelter daily, or a space for music with other instruments. My project will help to alleviate these problems, and give permanent access to musical opportunities for all of the residents.
I will be creating a Music Zone within the shelter which will include many permanent instruments, as well as all of the necessary furniture; such as chairs, bookshelves, amps etc. as well as teaching tools such as books and videos. This will offer a space for recovery and health, as well as creativity and fun, that the residents can look forward to in their daily lives.
